/// Biography of WÈKUP ///
Wèkup is a duo of multidisciplinary artists working in urban spaces since 2015.
Childhood friends, they met on the benches of middle school in Bobigny, in the suburbs of Paris. It was there that they discovered painting through graffiti in the early 2000s. They started by tagging, graffiti, then their artistic practice expanded around several mediums, including woodworking and cut-out.
Their creative process takes the form of a pictorial dialogue made of incessant back-and-forths. Like beatmakers looking for samples, they draw on their memories for images that they cut, twist and superimpose to create a dreamlike universe tinged with references to the 90s and the first digital designs.
They became known for putting alarm clocks in the streets of Paris, which meant that every day we wake up is an opportunity to live and change. Then, the eye became a recurring element in their art, denouncing the continuous observation that we are subjected to by social networks and technology.
The duo now works with municipalities, social landlords, institutions and companies to create installations and frescoes in urban spaces. They are particularly keen to set up participatory artistic projects in working-class neighborhoods, like the one they come from.
