This book is the second in a series of five, devoted to the history of Montmartre in all its aspects.
Unlike the Dictionary of Painters in Montmartre this book is widely illustrated. The iconography, in black and white or in color, consists of rather unknown and rarely published or even unpublished images. These are paintings, drawings, watercolors, gouaches, engravings, photos and old postcards. At the beginning of this book a historical fact completes that of the first volume, and focuses on the sociological evolution including the party, crime and different environments. It tells the story of places of worship, cabarets, restaurants, places of pleasure in general, the various old buildings, current and missing. Along the way some stubborn legends have been destroyed considering that reality is in itself a legend. Anecdotes, which are part of the local charm, have not been neglected. It is not only old or recent stories but also news because for some places we went until the beginning of the year 2000.
As before, it was taken into account the historic Montmartre which included the eighteenth arrondissement, the ninth arrondissement in its northern part, and a fringe of the village of Batignolles, and this for almost seven centuries.
