The dictionary contains 4285 biographies covering the period from 1800 to 1999, including avant-garde painters from Romanticism to Surrealism, academic painters and minor masters, as well as contemporary painters.

 

Many biographies are unpublished. The corpus of the dictionary is preceded by a history of Montmartre, centered more specifically on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. it is followed by appendices on the numerous quoted artists, on the streets of Montmartre, the artists of the Sacred Heart & thanks to all those who contributed in one way or another to research.
