Albert Marius Hippolyte Decaris, born May 6, 1901 in Sotteville-lès-Rouen (Seine-Inférieure) and died January 1, 1988 in Paris, is a painter, decorator and engraver French. Burinist renowned for his virtuosity, he also worked in watercolor and ink wash, often to prepare his engravings, and engraved many stamps.
He is the author of more than 600 large chisels, on various topics (mythology, views of Rome, Italy, Greece, Spain and France, allegories, portraits of contemporaries or historical figures) and many watercolors and ink wash.
1943: elected to the Academy of Fine Arts; he became president in 1960.
1948: gold medal in engraving at the 1948 Olympic Games.
1953: appointed knight in the Order of Merit postal by order of January 15, 1954.
1962: appointed official painter of the Navy.
1969: Gold Medal and Medal of Honor from the Society of French Artists for a burin engraving work.
Officer of the Legion of Honor.
June 1981: exhibition of his very large format works at the Musée de la Poste.
2001: issue of a stamp in his honor, drawn and engraved by Claude Jumelet.
