Marcel Gili, born February 12, 1914 in Thuir (Pyrénées-Orientales) and died December 10, 1993 in Paris, is a sculptor, painter and professor at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris.
According to Gili, figurative art, which is not a copy of appearances, "begins where the abstract stops", the first "stage" that the artist must cross at the start of his work, that of composition. "On the abstract canvas of the composition, it is necessary to integrate all the poetic dispositions which will enrich the composition so that these elements respond to infinity in a coherent global whole". Beyond, it is for the artist to bring to life "a horse, a man, a woman, in a word the shapes, the colors that we simply recognize by a kind of intuitive tenderness", which then pass "from the temporal to the eternal "
